My carbon monoxide alarm keeps sounding or I'm feeling unwell and suspect Carbon Monoxide poisoning
It’s sounding a single beep approximately once a minute
If it’s sounding a single beep once a minute, this means the battery is failing. This will sound like a 'chirp' and suggests the unit will need replacing. If the fault light is flashing, the detector needs changing.
Please make sure the fault light/battery light is flashing. If not, the fault could be with a smoke alarm and not your carbon monoxide detector. If you’re unsure, report the fault to us.
If you’re concerned about the CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarm chirping, turn off the boiler, fire and gas cooker until our electrician has attended and checked or replaced the alarm.
Please call us immediately as soon as you notice your alarm is failing so we can get someone out to you as soon as possible.
You should always have a working CO alarm in your home for your safety.
It’s ringing constantly
If it’s ringing constantly, it signals that the alarm may have detected carbon monoxide. This could be because of a faulty appliance.
Make sure it’s the CO alarm that’s sounding, as all our properties will have both smoke and CO alarms fitted.
You must:
- Ventilate the property by opening doors and windows.
- Turn the emergency valve off on the gas meter.

You should move outside immediately and stay there until Cadent have visited and told you it's safe to re-enter the property.
You should give us a call on 0300 456 2531 to let us know so we can attend after Cadent has been.

The longer you are exposed to the carbon monoxide leak, the worse your symptoms will be. If an appliance is faulty, the symptoms will only be present when it’s being used, so you will probably find that you start to feel worse when you’re at home as you’ll be near to the faulty appliance. You’re likely to feel much better when you leave the house, and only start to feel unwell again once you return. Pets can also be affected, so keep a careful eye on them for similar symptoms.
You should seek medical advice from either your GP or an A&E department and ask for a blood and/or breath test to confirm the presence of carbon monoxide, if appropriate. It is important to do this quickly after the suspected exposure because CO leaves the blood rapidly and tests to identify its presence may not be accurate more than four hours after exposure.
