My handle or button has broken on my toilet so I can't flush it

Firstly, lift the lid off the cistern to check if it is filled with water.

Some plastic toilets have screws in the lid, which you will have to undo first.

If the toilet is flushed with a push button, most cistern lids will just lift off, but some will be secured to the cistern by the button. You can try and unscrew this or try gently popping the buttons out to uncover the screw.

Here is a video to show you how you can flush your toilet manually, so you can still use your toilet until we can get out to complete a repair.

My toilet has a button flush

If you flush the toilet with a button, try and push the centre of the syphon (image below). If this flushes the toilet, leave the lid off, continue to use the toilet in this way, and report a repair.

My toilet has a handle flush

If the handle has snapped, you should be able to flush the toilet using the syphon/handle link.  Lift the metal joint between the handle and the syphon. This method can be used to flush the toilet until the handle can be replaced. If this works, continue to use the toilet in this way, and report a repair.

If this doesn’t work, our video shows you how you can flush your toilet manually, so you can still use your toilet until we can get out to complete a repair.

The toilet is not flushing but the handle or button is ok

You need to find out if there is water in the cistern.

First, lift the lid off the cistern to check if it is filled with water.

Some plastic toilets have screws in the lid, which you will have to undo first.

If the toilet is flushed with a push button, most cistern lids will just lift off, but some will be secured to the cistern by the button. You can try and unscrew this or try gently popping the buttons out to uncover the screw.

There’s no water in the cistern

Try to move the arm or the valve with the float (could be brass or plastic) at the end to see if the water starts to flow.

If by moving the float arm the problem is resolved, there’s no need to report a repair. If not, please report a repair.

I’ve checked and there is water in the cistern

You should be able to flush the toilet using the syphon/handle link.  Lift the metal joint between the handle and the syphon. This method can be used to flush the toilet until the handle can be replaced. If this does work, continue to use the toilet in this way, and report a repair.

I’ve tried this and it’s not worked

If these options don’t work, pour down the toilet using a bucket of water to flush it, and report a repair.
