My plug socket is broken or loose

My plug socket is broken or loose

If you can see any live parts showing, you must go to the fuse board and turn off the affected circuit as this could be potentially dangerous. All circuits are labelled.

Watch our video on how to isolate a socket.

Outside sockets should have a fused spur inside the property that can be turned off to make the socket safe. This is likely to be labelled to show which switch it is.

If you have something which needs to be kept plugged in, for example a fridge/freezer or fish tank, you should use an extension cable plugged into a socket that is working, and then plug whatever you need into the extension sockets. The only exception to this is an electric cooker, as these are hard wired into the wall and don’t have a plug. They will have their own circuit and can be isolated if there is an issue with the wiring to it.

If you can’t see any live parts, don’t use the socket until we come out to repair it.
