What is a discretionary housing payment?
A Discretionary Housing Payment (DHPs) is a government scheme that helps people who are receiving housing benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit. The scheme provides financial support to help with rent or housing costs.
DHP funding can help people that have been affected by:
- Benefit caps
- Removal of spare room subsidies
- And, Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates
The DHP payments can help you with arrears payments and future payments that you need help with.
How do I apply?
You apply through your local council. Each council decides how their application and payment process will work. Your council will look at your circumstances to see whether you are eligible for a DHP. They will decide whether to give you a DHP, how much you will be paid and how long you will receive the payment.
Find your local council here.
